Emergent Finishes

As the base building is now complete at Vaucluse, the all important finishes begin to be layered over the raw structure. This is where all the careful thought and drawing that goes on in the documentation phase pays dividends. Allowances for material thicknesses, for the colour, texture and the feel of the finished project all begin to emerge. There is a big proportion of the building budget going into this part of the project and you start to understand why. The intensity of the building site begins to increase as the number of trades and materials being handled and coordinated on site increases.

This is where lack of preparation or completeness of thinking would begin to show. Our preparation for this component of work is always evident as is our determination to see the work properly carried out. This is a team effort and good communication between our office, the builders and the contractors actually carrying out the works needs to be a priority.

Clients often for the first time begin to understand what the house will look and feel like. It can be a fraught but also exciting time in the process where each new layer can seem incongruous until the next is then applied and it all begins to make sense. For us as architects is also an exciting and sometimes nervous time as we start to see it all come together.
