Jon is currently traveling through Switzerland, Italy and France, exploring the area’s sites and architecture. The images below are of two houses by Peter Zumthor; the front house was built for his wife Annalisa, the other is a rental. Located just outside Vals, site of Zumthor’s famous thermal baths, these beautiful and humble structures were built using traditional timber construction methods and materials, albeit in new ways, as illustrated by comparison between the existing stone farm building on site and Zumthor’s timber houses. The traditional form, roof pitch and slate roof are all retained, the major difference is the insertion of large double glazed windows which take in the stunning mountain surrounds. Elegant examples of authentic regional architecture.
